Typography in Web Design is often something web designers think about last when they’re working on a project.
The checklist often goes something like this:
But, text and typography often take up more space in web design projects than any other element. So, if you want to be a good web designer you’ve got to be good at typography.
In this episode of the Self-Made Web Designer podcast, I talk with Oliver Schöndorfer. He’s an App & UI designer who’s really passionate about typography and he runs an awesome YouTube channel called “Pimp My Type.”
Oliver was first turned on to good typography in design school when he saw just how impactful good font choice could be on any design. He also noticed that a lot of designs had really bad typography.
So, he made it his mission to educate people and help folks learn how to use typography in a way that took things to another level AND, he’s sharing his expertise with us today.
Good typography in Web Design is a mixture of form and function.
We all intuitively feel a certain way about different types of fonts. Serif fonts have a professional feel to them. San serif fonts feel more modern and cutting-edge. Script fonts feel feminine or artistic.
So, you’ve got to be careful that the font you choose matches the feel of the project. If not you’ll be sending mixed signals to your users and that can lead to low engagement.
But, you’ve also got to think about the role the font plays in the web design project.
For instance, you wouldn’t want to use a thick display font that’s a bit difficult to read for more than short headlines. If you do you run the risk of users growing tired of reading multiple paragraphs of text with font that’s less intuitive to recognize.
Ultimately, becoming better at typography as a web designer comes with practice and intentionality.
If you put just a little bit of effort into your font and typography choices it can make a big difference in the overall experience of your designs.
So, don’t be discouraged if you don’t have the names of fonts memorized just yet OR if you don’t have a clue about what the word kerning means. Just keep practicing and follow other typography experts like Oliver to get better.
